- Israel knows nothing; you are a sinful people weighed down with guilt. Hear the word of Yahweh! What are your sacrifices to me? I am sick of holocausts of rams & the fat of cows. Come now, let us reason together. That harlot, Jerusalem! You will be ashamed of the terebinths. #Is1
- In the days to come, all nations shall come to the Temple of Yahweh. He shall judge among the nations & rebuke many people, & they shall beat their swords into plowshares. The day of the Lord of hosts shall be upon every one that is proud & lofty, & he shall be brought low. #Is2
- The Lord will take from Judah & Jerusalem hero & warrior, judge & prophet, diviner & elder. Babes shall rule over them. Jerusalem staggers, Judah is falling; they parade their sins like Sodom; they do not hide it. They have brought disaster on themselves. Woe to the wicked,… #Is3
- … Yahweh warns the haughty women of Jerusalem, instead of scent, a stink, instead of a hairdo, baldness. The men fall by the sword, so 7 women will fight for a single man. “Let us just bear your name.” Yahweh comes in smoke & cloud by day, and fire by night. #Is4
- Israel, the steward of the vineyard, clears the field & cares for the vines only to get bad fruit. Woe to you who chase drink from early morning, who draw iniquity with cords of vanity. As the fire devours stubble & chaff, the anger of the Lord is kindled against his people. #Is5
- In the year of Uzziah’s death, Isaiah has a vision of the Lord, is cleansed of sin, & offers to be the Lord’s messenger. Tell the people, You hear but do not understand; you see but do not perceive. Then said I, Lord, how long? Until the cities be wasted & the land desolate. #Is6
- Aramea and make war on Judah during the reign of Ahaz. Isaiah tell the people not to let their heart sink because of these two smoldering stumps. Ahaz says a sign is a virgin with child, a son to be called Immanuel. On curds & honey does he feed until he chooses good. #Is7
- Then I, Isaiah, made love to a prophetess and gave birth to a son called “quick to the plunder.” The Lord speaks of flooding the Euphrates, raising the war cry, preparing for battle, for God is with us. Do not call a conspiracy what they do, for the Lord is in a holy place. #Is8
- The vengeance of the Lord to Israel & Judah is prophesied. The people dwell in the land of the shadow of death. The wrath of the Lord is a darkened land: the wickedness & people are as fuel to the fire. Unto us a child is born, & his name shall be called The Prince of Peace. #Is9
- The Lord says, Woe to those who commit injustice, & to Assyria, the rod of my anger. The light of Israel will be a fire, and shall burn & devour thorns and briers. The remnant of Israel shall return. People of Zion, do not fear Assyria: the Lord God will hew down the proud. #Is10
- A rod from the stem of Jesse shall come forth with the spirit of wisdom & understanding. He shall smite the earth with the rod of his mouth, & the wolf shall dwell with the lamb. To the root of Jesse shall the Gentiles seek. The Lord will recover the remnant of his people. #Is11
- Behold, God is my salvation; I will trust and not be afraid, for the Lord Jehovah is my strength and my song. With joy you shall draw water out of the wells of salvation. Praise the Lord, call upon his name, and declare his deeds so that his name is exalted. #Is12
- Isaiah has a vision of Babylon’s destruction. Howl, for the day of the Lord is at hand. They shall be afraid; pangs & sorrow will take hold of them: I will punish the world for their evil. All that are found will be thrust through, & their children will be dashed to pieces. #Is13
- Isaiah prophesies the return of the exiles, the destruction of Babylon & Syria, & gives a warning to Philistines. The king of Babylon shall be covered with worms & taken to Sheol. I will sweep Babylon away. I will break Assyria & kill its roots with famine. Howl, Palestine! #Is14
- Isaiah delivers an oracle to and lament for Moab. They shall wear sackcloth and weep abundantly. The waters will dry up, and the land become desolate. The waters of Dimon will be full of blood. Lions will attack those that flee, and the remnant of the land. #Is15
- A refuge for Moabites, & a lament for & oracle on Moab is given. Give refuge to those who have been driven out of Moab. Because of the pride & lies of Moab, they shall howl & their fields shall languish. No wine will be tread from the winepress. The glory of Moab will end. #Is16
- Isaiah delivers an oracle on Damascus. It will cease to be a city, & shall be a ruinous heap. The fortress of Ephraim will cease, leaving only a remnant, as gleanings are left in the field. Then shall they honor Yahweh Sabaoth. Woe to roaring nations; God shall rebuke them. #Is17
- An oracle on Cush is given. Woe to the land beyond the rivers of Ethiopia, a tall and bronzed nation to be feared. Yahweh speaks to the people of the world: you will be abandoned like a ripened grape left to the fowls of the mountains and beasts of the earth. #Is18
- An oracle against Egypt: I will set Egyptian against Egyptian: their rivers will dry up. The princes of Zoan are fools & Pharaoh’s counsellors brutish. Judah shall terrorize Egypt. The Lord shall smite Egypt and heal it. Blessed be Egypt my people and Israel my inheritance. #Is19
- In the year that Sargon of Assyria captured Ashdod (c. 721 BC), the Lord told Isaiah to walk naked and barefoot. He did this for 3 years as a sign that Assyria will take Egyptians, naked and barefoot, captive. This shame of Egypt will leave them asking, how shall we escape? #Is20
- Oracles on the maritime plain (southern Babylon), Edom, the Arabs, and the fall of Kedar are given. A watchman of Yahweh warns of Babylon’s fall at the hands of Elam & Media (Persia), as sudden as a desert storm: Fallen is Babylon, and the images of her gods are broken. #Is21
- An oracle on the valley of vision (Jerusalem): Referring to the assault by Sennacherib, Isaiah says that your rulers will flee. The people will say Let us eat and drink, for tomorrow we shall die. Shebna, protector of Judah, will flee, be captured, & be replaced by Eliakim. #Is22
- An oracle on the merchant city of Tyre, telling of its destruction, and being laid waste for 70 years. The Lord has commanded its demise to humble the pride of its glory. After the 70 years, it shall be as a harlot, committing fornication with all the kingdoms on earth. #Is23
- Behold, the Lord has laid waste to the earth & scattered its inhabitants, as they have broken the covenant. All joy is darkened, & the mirth of the land is gone. Fear & the pit are upon them. The Lord shall punish kings & those on high, and the Lord shall reign over Zion. #Is24
- O Lord, I exalt you, for you have been a strength to the poor, a refuge from the storm & a shadow from the heat. And on this mountain, Yahweh Sabaoth shall make a feast unto all people. He will swallow up death in victory. Our God will save us, & Moab shall be trodden down. #Is25
- In that day a song will be sung in Judah. Trust in the Lord forever. The wicked will not learn. When his hand is lifted, they will not see & shall not live: make their memory perish. Distressed, as a woman with child, so are we in your sight. Yahweh will punish the wicked. #Is26
- In that day the Lord shall slay Leviathan. Sing to the vineyard the Lord keeps: Israel will blossom & bud and fill the world with fruit. The boughs that wither shall be set on fire. It shall come to pass that they will come which were to perish, and shall worship the Lord. #Is27
- Woe to the drunkards of Ephraim who shall be trodden underfoot, the priest and prophet drunk on wine, & the scoffers who have made lies their refuge. Hail shall sweep away the refuge of lies, like a farmer who plows and sows, but harvests fennel, cumin, & corn differently. #Is28
- Woe to Ariel, the city of David. The nations that fight Ariel shall be as a hungry man who dreams of eating and wakes up hungry. The vision is as a sealed book that men cannot read. In that day, the deaf shall hear the words, the blind shall see, & the meek shall be joyful. #Is29
- Woe to those rebellious people who seek refuge in Egypt and who do not hear the law of the Lord. He shall break you like shards of pottery. Though the Lord gives you bread of adversity, if you rid the graven images, your harvests will flourish & Assyria will be beaten down. #Is30
- Woe to those who go to Egyptians for help, for they are men & not God. The Lord of hosts will come down to fight for Zion. In that day, every man shall cast away his idols. The Assyrians shall fall by the sword but not by man. They shall fear the Lord whose fire is in Zion. #Is31
- A king shall reign in righteousness as a shelter from the storm. The vile person speaks villainy & his heart works iniquity. Hear my words, idle women, for your harvest shall fail. When the spirit is poured on us, the field will be fruitful & my people shall dwell in peace. #Is32
- Woe to the ravager and treacherous; you will be ravaged and plundered accordingly. Lord, be our strength. He that walks righteously shall dwell on high. Look upon Zion, for the Lord is our judge. He will save us. The people that dwell there shall be forgiven. #Is33
- Judgments against Edom and Zion’s foes are foretold. The Lord’s fury is on their armies. Their slain will be cast out. The sword of the Lord is filled with blood, for it is the day of the Lord’s vengeance. Their land shall be laid waste, and taken over by thorns & beasts. #Is34
- The joy of the redeemed is described. Behold, your God will come with vengeance to save you. You will sing songs to Zion and walk on the highway of holiness. The desert shall bloom, the blind shall see, the deaf hear, & the lame leap. The parched ground shall become a pool. #Is35
- Rabshakeh, cup-bearer of Sennacherib, meets Eliakim, Shebna, & Joah, advisors to Hezekiah, telling them that they face destruction by Assyria. Do not listen to Hezekiah when he says trust in the Lord. Make an agreement with Assyria.The advisors tells Hezekiah his words. #Is36
- Hezekiah, in despair, sends for Isaiah: Yahweh says, Fear not the words you have heard, for I will destroy them. The king of Assyria will fall by the sword. Sennacherib again threatens, but Isaiah tells him not to fear. The Lord slays the Assyrians & Sennacherib is killed. #Is37
- Hezekiah falls ill & is near death but prays to Yahweh, who adds 15 years to his life. The sign of Yahweh is the shadow going backwards (#2Kg20). Hezekiah delivers a canticle to the Lord: Only the living can praise you, not the dead. We will sing in the house of the Lord. #Is38
- Marduk-Baladan, son of the king of Babylon, congratulates Hezekiah on his recovery. Hezekiah shows their messengers all the treasures of the palace. Isaiah tells Hezekiah that Babylon will carry all these treasures away & make his sons eunuchs in the palace of Babylon. #Is39
- The prophet cries, Prepare the way of the Lord. The grass withers, the flowers fade, but the word of God is forever. All nations are as nothing compared to the majesty of the Lord. He gives power to the weak. Even youths weary, but the Lord shall renew their strength. #Is40
- Who raised up the righteous man from the east? I, the Lord. Fear not, Israel, for I have chosen you. You shall thresh them. I will make the wilderness a pool of water with cedar, acacias, and myrtle. I raised one from the north. The works of your counselors are as nothing. #Is41
- Behold my servant, who will bring judgment to the Gentiles. He is a covenant to the people and light of the nations. Sing unto the Lord. Hear, ye deaf, and look, ye blind, to the Lord’s servant. The Lord gave Israel to the robbers, for they were not obedient unto his law. #Is42
- Israel, fear not, for I have redeemed thee. I, even I, am the Lord. For your sake, I will send an army to Babylon and bring down the Chaldeans. I give rivers in the desert for my chosen people to drink. Though you have transgressed, I will not remember your sins. #Is43
- Hear, Israel, who I formed from the womb, & the Yeshurun, who I have chosen. I will pour my spirit on your seed. I am the first & the last; beside me is no God. Man makes an idol from wood that can be burnt for fire or fuel. You are my servant, Israel, & Cyrus my shepherd. #Is44
- I will go before you, Cyrus, to subdue nations & loose the loins of kings for Jacob my servant’s sake. Woe to him that strives with his maker. Does the clay question the potter? Israel shall be saved in the Lord with everlasting salvation & all the seed of Israel justified. #Is45
- The idols of the gods of Babylon, Bel, bowing down, and Nebo, stooping, will be carried away in laden carts. But I, the Lord, will be here until you are aged. I am God and there is none other. A man from the east shall execute my plans. I bring victory and glory to Israel. #Is46
- Sit in the dust, daughters of Babylon, for your shame shall be seen. I, Yahweh Sabaoth, was angry with my people & gave them to you who showed no mercy, even to the aged. For your wickedness, you will lose your children & become widows. Your sorcerers will not save you. #Is47
- Hear this, Israel: I declared these things & they came to pass. I showed these things to you obstinate people, so you cannot credit idols. For the sake of your name, I deferred my anger. He who I loved will perform my pleasure on Chaldea. There is no peace for the wicked. #Is48
- Yahweh, who called me from the womb to be his servant, says: I will make you, Israel, a light unto the nations so that my salvation reaches all. Kings will choose the holy one of Israel, & will bow down to my standard. You will not be ashamed. I, the Lord, am your savior. #Is49
- For your iniquities, you have sold yourself. At my rebuke I dry up the sea and clothe the heaven with blackness. The Lord God has given me his servant, the tongue of the learned. I did not hide from shame and spitting. Trust in the Lord, and walk in the light of your fire. #Is50
- Hearken to me, for I give you the law. Lift up your eyes to the heavens & to the earth below. My salvation shall be forever. The redeemed of the Lord shall return singing to Zion. I, who laid the foundations of the earth, will comfort you & say to Zion: you are my people. #Is51
- Awake, awake! You were sold for nought, and will be redeemed for nought from Egypt & Assyrian oppressors. Break forth into joy, Jerusalem, for your God reigns! Make the unclean depart and the clean carry my vessels. My servant will be exalted, and will astonish the nations. #Is52
- To whom is the power of the Lord revealed? My servant is despised & rejected, & has borne our sorrows. He was wounded for our sins. Through his wounds we are healed. We are like sheep gone astray; he like a lamb to the slaughter. By his suffering, he shall bear their sins. #Is53
- Sing, barren women, for your race shall inherit the nations. Fear not, for the Lord is your husband, who has mercy on you. I briefly forsook you, but with mercy I take you back. Afflicted city, I will rebuild you with foundations of sapphires & rubies, and gates of crystal. #Is54
- Let the hungry poor eat without paying. I will make you a covenant, and a witness to the people. Seek the Lord and let the wicked repent. For as the rain comes down to water the earth and make it bud & bring food, so shall my word go forth from my mouth & do what I please. #Is55
- The Lord offers salvation to all, not only Israelites, who serve him and follow his laws. To those who take hold of my covenant, I will give them an everlasting name. For my house will be a house of prayer for all people. Our watchmen are greedy dogs who never have enough. #Is56
- The righteous perish, but are taken from evil to come and shall enter into peace. To the sons of the adulterer and whore, are you not children of sin? To the idolators, there is no hope. When you cry out, let your idols deliver you. There is no peace for the wicked. #Is57
- Cry aloud & show my people their sins. They find pleasure & do business on fast days. Is this what I want? On fast days, free the oppressed, give bread to the hungry & clothe the naked. Then you shall be as a watered garden. Keep the sabbath & you shall delight in the Lord. #Is58
- Your iniquities have kept you from God; your lips utter lies, hatching adders’ eggs and weaving a spider’s web. We grope like the blind, and find no salvation or intercessor. The redeemer shall come to Zion, and to those who turn from sin. #Is59
- Arise, shine, for the light and the glory of the Lord is upon you. The nations shall come to your light. Foreigners will build your walls & will bow down before you. You will be suckled on the milk of nations. Not from the sun or moon but from Yahweh will you receive light. #Is60
- The Lord has anointed me to bring good news to the poor, to proclaim liberty to captives, and to comfort those who mourn. They will repair the cities, and you will eat the riches of nations. I will rejoice in the Lord, for he has clothed me in the garments of salvation. #Is61
- I will proclaim the righteousness and salvation of Zion. The nations will see it, and you will be called a new name. As the bridegroom rejoices over the bride, so shall God rejoice over you. Tell the daughter of Zion that your salvation cometh. #Is62
- A chilling vision of Yahweh’s wrath is presented: I will trample the people in my fury, and their blood will stain my raiment. Then Yahweh’s mercy is praised: In his love and pity, he redeemed them. But they rebelled, vexing him. The spirit of the Lord caused them to rest. #Is63
- Come down from the heavens, and make my name known to your enemies. You are angry, for we have sinned. Be not angry, O Lord, for we are your people. Our holy and glorious temple is burned to the ground, and the holy cities a wilderness. Will you refrain yourself? #Is64
- I am sought by those who rejected me. I spread out my hands to a rebellious people, who eat pig’s flesh and blasphemed. I will not destroy them, but choose a new seed from Judah. My servants will rejoice. Behold, I create a new heaven & earth: they are the seed of the Lord. #Is65
- The Lord looks to the poor and contrite. Heaven is my throne and earth my footstool. Your offerings offend me. You did evil before me. The Lord comes in a whirlwind of chariots. By fire and sword Yahweh will execute judgment. I will gather all nations to witness my glory. #Is66
