- God sent prophets & angels in the past, but now he has sent his Son, who is the radiance of God’s glory & the perfect image of his person. Old Testament passages show that angels are ministering spirits sent to serve God & his Son. Let all God’s angels worship him (#Dt32). #Heb1
- Jesus, though above the angels, became human and below the angels in order to share in humanity’s suffering. By the grace of God, He tasted death so that everyone could find salvation. He frees us from the fear of death and makes atonement for our sins. #Heb2
- Jesus, the Son of God who built this house, has greater honor than Moses, who serves in this house. Refrain from rebelliousness and do not harden your hearts. Otherwise, like the Israelites in the Wilderness, you will not be able to enter the promised land. #Heb3
- A sabbath rest is given to the people of God, but not to the disobedient. Let us labor to enter that rest. Jesus is our great high priest who, without sin, allows us boldly to come unto the throne of grace. #Heb4
- The high priest, who ministers to the ignorant in things pertaining to God, does not take this honor on himself, but is called by God. So also was Christ glorified by the Father: Thou art my Son. Partake of the milk of first principles before meat to discern good and evil. #Heb5
- The land that drinks in the rain falling on it and produces a crop useful to those for whom it is farmed receives the blessing of God. But land that produces thorns and thistles is worthless and will be cursed and burned. Jesus enters on our behalf, ensuring God’s promise. #Heb6
- Jesus, descended from Judah, is like the high priest Melchizedek who, though not a Levite, blessed Abraham. Yet Abraham, from whose loins the Levites come, paid him a tithe. Jesus, with no oath but through His sacrifice, is a high priest after the order of Melchizedek. #Heb7
- Jesus is the high priest who sits at the right hand of the Majesty in heaven. The prophet Jeremiah says, Behold, the days come when the Lord will make a new covenant with the house of Israel & the house of Judah. It is needed because they continued not in my covenant. #Heb8
- The high priest enters the inner tabernacle once a year with blood as an offering to the Lord for the sins of Israel. Christ offers himself with blood but once for the redemption of sin, & to mediate the new testament which, like the fulfillment of a will, requires a death. #Heb9
- Though priests offer yearly sacrifices for the sins of the people, Jesus offered himself as a sacrifice but once for all. He has given us a new and living way. Avoid sin which merits death. Exhort one another to love and good deeds. #Heb10
- A sermon on faith: Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen. By faith, Noah built an ark, Abraham offered Isaac as a sacrifice, the Israelites fled Egypt, etc. The prophets, through faith, conquered kingdoms and administered justice. #Heb11
- Run the race of faith; avoid sin & endure scorn to reach Jesus. Do not grow weary. Accept discipline to share in God’s holiness. Come to Mount Zion, the city of the living God, of 1000s of angels in joyous assembly in the city of joy. Be holy. Our God is a consuming fire. #Heb12
- The letter ends by exhorting believers to love one another, be hospitable, visit prisoners & avoid sexual immorality. The high priest burns the offerings outside the tabernacle but brings blood inside. The blood of Jesus makes holy the people. Go to Him outside the camp. #Heb13
