- The Lord gives instructions to Moses for the Israelites to prepare burnt offerings of bulls, sheep, goats, and pigeons or doves. It is a burnt sacrifice, an offering made by fire, of a sweet savor unto the Lord. #Lv1
- Directions for grain offerings for the altar are given. The finest flour without yeast must be used. The directions include how it is mixed, how olive oil is added, and how it is burnt. It should contain no honey. #Lv2
- Nonobligatory peace/fellowship offerings are prescribed for herd animals, e.g., cattle or oxen, or flock animals, e.g., sheep or goats. The blood is sprinkled on the altar. It shall be a perpetual statute that ye eat neither fat nor blood. #Lv3
- Sin offerings are prescribed. Atonement is provided by burnt offerings of a young bull for sins of priests or the Israelite community at large, a male goat for leaders and a female goat for members (though a lamb without defect is also permitted). #Lv4
- Sin and guilt offerings are further prescribed for atonement of unintentional sins. Examples of these are touching an unclean animal or human and later realizing that they were unclean. #Lv5
- Atonement for deliberate sins, e.g., stealing, cheating & lying, amounts to restitution plus a fifth to the person affected. In addition, guilt offerings are required, which include burnt and grain offerings. The manner in which they are offered is given. #Lv6
- Regulations for burnt, sin, guilt, fellowship, food & ordination offerings are summarized. Eating blood is forbidden, though the altar is sprinkled with blood of the animal. Bread with yeast is allowed in certain cases. The share of offerings going to priests is detailed. #Lv7
- Moses, as commanded by the Lord, assembles the Israelites to consecrate Aaron and his sons as priests. This 7-day ceremony involves sacrificing a bull and a ram, anointing Aaron and his sons with blood, and preparing burnt offerings, as prescribed earlier. #Lv8
- On the 8th day, Moses summoned Aaron and the elders of Israel to sacrifice oxen, goats, and rams for sin/purification, fellowship, and grain offerings. The glory of the Lord appeared unto the people. #Lv9
- Aaron’s eldest sons, Nadab & Abihu, burn unauthorized incense in the sanctuary and are devoured by fire from the Lord. Aaron’s family is forbidden to mourn, though the house of Israel may. Aaron’s two other sons, Eleazar & Ithamar, make purification offerings. #Lv10
- The Lord tells Moses which ye shall eat: beasts that both chew the cud and have a cloven hoof, and fish with fins and scales. Unclean fowl are named. Insects that can be eaten are named. A person touching the carcass of an unclean animal shall be unclean to the evening. #Lv11
- A woman who gives birth to a son will be unclean for 7 days, & the boy will be circumcised on the 8th. A woman is unclean during her period. A woman giving birth to a girl is unclean for 2 weeks. An unclean woman is to avoid the temple. Purification offerings are defined. #Lv12
- Assorted skin diseases and the circumstances under which the defiled person is clean or unclean are described. The man whose hair is fallen off his head, he is bald, yet he is clean. Laws concerning cleanliness of garments, such as those worn by lepers, are given. #Lv13
- The purification offerings related to, for example, skin diseases, are described. The priestly offerings to make the unclean clean are considerable. The priests are also in charge of inspecting molds in houses and garments and treating them, as detailed herein. #Lv14
- 32 This is the law of him that hath an issue, and of him whose seed goeth from him, and is defiled therewith; 33 And of her that is sick of her flowers, and of him that hath an issue, of the man, and of the woman, and of him that lieth with her that is unclean. #Lv15
- The Lord tells Moses that Aaron is not to be in the temple except under certain conditions. Sin and holocaust offerings—a scapegoat—atone for the sins of Israel. The Day of Atonement is to be kept. #Lv16
- The Lord says to Moses, All ox, lamb, or goat sacrifices are to be made at the entrance to the tent of meeting. No sacrifices to goat idols are allowed. It is the blood that makes atonement for one’s life. None of you may eat blood. #Lv17
- Do not have sexual relations with close female relatives except one’s wife. Do not have sexual relations with a man as one does with a woman; that is detestable. Do not defile thyself. Do not have sexual relations with animals. #Lv18
- The Lord summarizes the Law to Moses. Be holy, because I, your Lord and God, am holy. Follow the Commandments. Leave the gleanings to the poor. The fruit is forbidden 3 years. Do not plant your field with 2 kinds of seed, cut your bodies, or put on tattoos. I am the Lord. #Lv19
- Worship of Moloch, adultery & many sins involving sexual relations with relatives warrant death. If a man has sexual relations with a man as one has with a woman, both of them have done what is detestable. They are to be put to death; their blood will be on their own heads. #Lv20
- Rules are given for priests to avoid uncleanliness from touching a dead person or a menstruating woman. A priest’s wife must be a virgin when wed, not a divorcee or prostitute, or she disgraces her father & must be burned. Persons with defects cannot approach the sanctuary. #Lv21
- Sacrifices for ceremonial uncleanliness such as skin disease, corpse-touching, seminal & other discharges, etc. are described. One must sacrifice a male ox, goat, sheep without deform or defect. I am the Lord who made you holy, & who brought you out of Egypt to be your God. #Lv22
- The Lord recounts feasts to Moses: Refrain from work on the Sabbath; Passover; the Feast of Unleavened Bread; Offering of First Fruits; the Festival of Weeks (Pentecost); the Festival of Trumpets; the Day of Atonement; the Feast of Tabernacles. #Lv23
- The Lord gives Moses instructions for using olive oil to fuel tabernacle lamps and for making bread as a food offering. The punishment for blasphemy is death. The blaspheming son of an Israeli mother and Egyptian father is stoned to death, as commanded by the Lord. #Lv24
- Fields should have a sabbath rest after 6 years of planting. The 50th year, after seven sabbaths of years, is the Jubilee year, when debts are forgiven and land is left unplanted. Rules for redemption when one falls into poverty and is forced to sell property are given. #Lv25
- Observe our covenant, saith the Lord, and you will enjoy land and peace. If not, I will repay your sins seven times over. You will eat the flesh of your sons & the flesh of your daughters. I will turn your cities into ruins. You will flee even when no one is pursuing you. #Lv26
- The Lord gives instructions to Moses for dedicating persons, animals, land, houses, and property as something holy to the Lord. This includes assigning values for men and women, clean and unclean animals and property, and how to redeem the devoted goods. #Lv27
