Poetry (selections)

Nothing worse

When you think                                    Take a drink
That nothing can                                  And marvel at
Ever get worse                                      The universe

RIP Ryan Grove

They are falling in the battlefield of life,
They are falling one by one,
At times by two, and by many, and by few.
Fall they do, men at front, women beside,
And children behind, so Nature’s lied
That false promise of eternal youth
Lies bleeding next to bloody truth

Lyrics (selected)

I Paved the Path

I paved the path from birth to death
With a trail of dollar bills
I sold my tears to the highest bidder
And my blood for the cheapest thrills

For death will march around us
Move on down the block
And life will be as it once was
One less hour on the clock

The seasons move on round and round
The days they flash right by
And life or what it’s meant to be
Is just a glimpse in tonight’s sky

And she who would make all things clear
shows up in a neon sign
Nude review! This means you too!
So go fetch your birthday suit

Or tutu if you’re feeling blue
And do be do, I say to you

I woke up once this morning
And a second time just now
let me show you how it’s done
before I’ve got to run

And beat the cars and beat the Sun
To go home one more time
To reach home one last time

For  if it’s you and what to do
And if it’s round and round we go
For if it’s me and what to be
And if you find me set me free

I’m off to see the  show
I’m off to sell the show

Where the dreams are made of

Thought clouds in a sea of snow
Where the drums beat time for
The band has got to go

Literary Work

Wu Xinran, I am Sorry (2023)

non-fiction short story

An American Lyric (2002), unpublished

Excerpts:

nice, nice theorem, you’re nice. Emmy. I wonder if she was nice? I bet she was! One of the commandments, brought down by Moses. Moses, oh Moses! Did God really mean that angular momentum is conserved, or was he just saying, you know, like “approximately?” It would make a big difference to us down here. Moses goes up the mountain and asks God, Elohim, the unknown name of Y_v_h. Some poor stooge accidentally utters it and God pops up and utterly destroys him for disturbing his slumber. There goes that knowledge. Drop him into a black hole, God. Bring him back. Violate causality. You’re a tough dude, but can You do that? We’re talking big God here. #1, Numero Uno, big Cahuna. Plays with me before He kills me. But He’s nice with Moses. They’re on a first name basis. Moses knows God’s name, got Him on the cellphone, the 216 digit cosmic garage-key credit card number. Big Guy, what do you say?

EXACTLY

and another

Massive black hole, starved for fuel, dead rock, journey to Nepal, tall mountain, resplendent splendour quiet peaceful Nature contemplation end of things, and sex!, and the disposition of one’s bones. It never made any sense to me. None of it. Science answers questions of how and not why. I beg to differ, bullshit! The how folds into the why. Like they are separate categories, think again. The underlying monotony of being. Synchro-synoptic multi-wavelength multi-messenger metempsychosis metaphor for death, the end of time, frozen star, collapsed star, membrane paradigm, brane theory brain, the thinker thinks thoughtful thoughts. Very thoughtful of you, thank you very much for listening to our speculations.

much much more but we’ll stop here:

I would like to take my family to Sicily. I’ve decided I like it. Maury, please invite me back. And don’t you dare…, you know, how should I say this without seeming or being disrespectful, well, look on the bright side, stay alive! Thank you for June in Sicily. And especially for what was not: no TV (except for the World Cup in espresso bars), no newspapers, every third day no water to take a shower. And for what was: soccer, science, football, physics, vino, fish with heads, foosball, statues, graduate students, futbol, veal, yes, vistas, yes, espressos, yes yes, I say yes, sí, sí Sicily.
